What Can You Recycle in Auckland? A Simple Guide
Auckland's recycling system is straightforward once you know the rules. Here's exactly what goes in your blue bin — and what doesn't.
What CAN go in your blue bin
Paper and cardboard (flattened), glass bottles and jars (rinsed), plastic bottles and containers with recycling codes 1, 2, or 5, tin and aluminium cans (rinsed), and aerosol cans (empty).
What CANNOT go in your blue bin
Plastic bags, soft plastics, styrofoam, broken glass, electronics, clothing, batteries, food waste, nappies, and garden waste. These contaminate your recycling and can cause the whole load to go to landfill.
The Golden Rules
Rinse containers before recycling. Don't bag your recycling — loose is best. When in doubt, leave it out. Contaminated recycling often ends up in landfill anyway, so it's better to throw uncertain items in the rubbish.
Make It Easy with Kerby
